Abstract
Background: Obesity is a growing global health concern associated with reduced functional capacity and impaired performance of daily activities. Exercise-based interventions play an important role in improving cardiovascular fitness and physical function. Circuit training is a time-efficient and adaptable exercise method; however, evidence regarding structured home-based circuit training programmes in adults with obesity remains limited.
Aim: This study aimed to determine the effect of a six-week structured home-based circuit training programme on functional capacity in adults with obesity.
Methods: A pre-test–post-test interventional study was conducted among 30 adults with obesity aged 18–45 years in Jalgaon city. Participants completed a structured home-based body-weight circuit training programme for six weeks. Functional capacity was assessed before and after the intervention using the Six-Minute Walk Test. Data were analysed using the Shapiro–Wilk test for normality and a paired-samples t-test for comparison. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.
Results: The mean Six-Minute Walk distance increased significantly from 331.50 ± 48.78 metres to 440.83 ± 56.74 metres after the intervention. The mean improvement was 109.33 metres. The paired-samples t-test indicated a statistically significant difference, t(29) = −18.26, p < 0.001.
Conclusion: A structured six-week home-based circuit training programme was associated with a significant improvement in functional capacity among adults with obesity. This low-cost and accessible intervention may be suitable for implementation in home and community settings.
